Email and Online Fraud
What is email fraud?
Phony email messages sent to you for the purpose of stealing personal and financial information are among the most common type of email fraud. Disguised as legitimate email and claiming to be from sources you trust, these messages attempt to entice you to provide various types of personal and confidential information, including online IDs and passwords, Social Security numbers and account numbers. Also known as phishing or spoofing, the practice of email fraud is commonly used by criminals to gain access to your existing accounts or to use your personal and financial information to open new accounts. Bank of McKenney will NEVER ask you for any personal or account information through an email message.
How do you recognize email fraud?
Spotting phony email messages is not always easy. The criminals who use them are becoming more and more sophisticated in creating them. Phony email messages may ask you to reply to them directly or they may ask you to click on a link that takes you to a bogus website that appears legitimate. In either case, they will generally ask you to provide sensitive personal, financial or account information.
Here are some things you should know about phony emails and some tips on spotting them:
Frequently these emails make some form of urgent appeal, for example, stating that your account may be closed if you fail to confirm, verify or authenticate your personal information immediately.
Bogus emails often provide a general greeting and don’t identify you by name, for example, “Dear valued Bank of McKenney customer.”
Typos and other Errors
Fraudulent emails or websites may contain typographical or grammatical errors. The writing may also be awkward, stilted or inappropriate. The visual or design quality may be poor.
Tips for Protecting Yourself Against Email and Online Fraud
- Don’t take anything for granted. Always keep in mind that forging emails and creating bogus websites is not difficult.
- Do no click on links you receive in an email message asking for sensitive personal, financial or account information.
- Confirm the validity of all requests for sensitive personal, financial or account information, particularly if they are made with an urgent or threatening tone.
- Call the company directly to confirm requests for updating or verifying personal or account information.
- Confirm requests for personal or account information by going to the company website directly. Open a new browser window, type in the website address and check to see if you must actually perform any activity that an email may be asking you to do, for example, change a password.
- Do not share your IDs or passwords with anyone.
- Look for a secure connection on websites asking for personal or account information, normally indicated by the presence of “https://” in your browser’s address bar.
- If you think you may have provided personal or account information in response to a fraudulent email or website, report the fraud immediately, change your passwords and monitor your account activity frequently.
- Always sign-off websites or secure areas of websites (for example, online banking) for which you use an ID and password to enter.

In addition to protecting yourself against email and online fraud, you should also be aware of the danger of online viruses to damage or compromise the security of your computer.
If your computer becomes infected with a virus, you could possibly lose information and incur repair expenses. Make sure your computer has an anti-virus protection program installed to reduce the risk of your computer becoming infected.
We recommend that you purchase a program that automatically upgrades your virus protection on a recurring basis. If you currently do not have automatic upgrade features, make sure you update your virus detection program weekly and when you hear of a new virus.
We advise that you not open attachments or diskettes unless you are certain that you can trust the source. Learn how to manually screen diskettes and attachments if your anti-virus software does not automatically screen for viruses.
Identity Theft Protection
Identity theft happens when someone steals personal information such as your bank account number or Social Security number and then uses this information illegally, such as withdrawing money from your account.
If you are a Bank of McKenney customer and you think you are a victim of identity theft, immediately contact Bank of McKenney by calling the phone number listed on your statement.
Take these Precautions to Protect Your Information
- Be discriminating when providing personal information such as Social Security number and account or credit card information over the telephone, in person or on the Internet. Don’t give out this information unless you are sure with whom you are dealing.
- Protect your Social Security number and the Social Security numbers of your children and other family members by not carrying them in your wallet.
- Report lost or stolen checks, credit or debit cards immediately. Bank of McKenney will block payment on the check numbers or account numbers involved.
- Store new checks and account statements in a safe place.
- Notify your banker of suspicious phone inquiries such as those asking for account information to “verify a statement” or “award a prize.”
- Review your credit report at least once every year. Make sure all information is up-to-date and accurate.
- Memorize your PIN (Personal Identification Number) and refrain from writing it, your Social Security number or credit card number on a check.
- Tear up or shred any pre-approved credit offers to which you do not respond. Thieves can use these offers to assume your identity.
- Keep mail secure. Don’t mail bills or sensitive information from your home or unsecured mailboxes. Retrieve and review your mail promptly. Thieves may use the personal information contained in your mail to steal your identity.
- If you do not receive your regular bills when expected, call the company to find out why.
- Review your monthly account statements thoroughly. Investigate suspicious items immediately to head off any possible fraud before it occurs.
- Do not carry your Social Security card, passport or birth certificate unless needed that day.
- Protect your privacy and the privacy of others. Be aware of others in the line behind you. Position yourself in front of the ATM keyboard to prevent anyone from observing your PIN. Be courteous while waiting at an ATM, and keep a polite distance. Allow the person to complete his or her transaction before approaching the machine.
- Be prepared. Have your card ready before approaching the ATM. When your transaction is complete, pocket your card and cash immediately. Count it later in the safety of your locked car or home.
- Drive up ATMs. Remember to keep your doors locked, your other car windows up and your car running.
- Treat your ATM card like cash. Guard your ATM card as carefully as cash, checks and credit cards.
- Keep your PIN (Personal Identification Number) private. Do not write your PIN on your card or keep it in your wallet. Memorize it or keep it at home. Stand directly in front of an ATM when entering your PIN.
- Save your receipts. Do not leave your receipt at the ATM. Remember to record each transaction and match it to your monthly statement.
- Stay alert. Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. Park in a well-lit area and have someone accompany you. If you notice anything suspicious, use another ATM or come back later.
- Report suspicious behavior. If you notice anything unusual, cancel your transaction, pocket your card and leave immediately. Go to a safe place and call the police if you suspect dangerous or illegal activity.
What if my card gets lost or stolen?
Notify Bank of McKenney immediately. During non-business hours, please call the lost/stolen card hotline at 1-800-528-2273. The use of your card will be discontinued and you will be instructed on how to order a new one. For more detailed information, please refer to your Electronic Funds Transfer Agreement.
Prevent Credit Card Fraud
- Sign Immediately. Sign the signature panel on your credit cards as soon as you receive them and keep the duplicates in a safe place.
- Memorize your PIN. Don’t carry your PIN (Personal Identification Number). Memorize it or keep the number at home.
- Verify your card. Be sure your credit card is returned after a purchase, and that it is indeed your card.
- Wait for your credit card receipt. Don’t leave your credit card receipts at the checkout counter. Always take your charge slips and tear up any carbons.
- Save your receipts. Check them against your monthly billing or account statements to make sure you can identify all of your transactions. Report any unauthorized transaction immediately. After you have reconciled your billing statements, tear up all receipts and discard them at home.
- Check statements and watch your charges. Verify that your monthly statement reflects the amount you authorized. Also, watch for multiple charges.
- Keep it private. Keep your statements in a safe place.
- Out of sight. Never leave your purse or wallet unattended and always keep your cards out of plain sight.
- Never lend your card. Your credit card is your responsibility. Also, periodically check to make sure you have all your cards.
- Keep a list. In a separate location, keep a list of account numbers and telephone numbers to call if your cards are lost or stolen.
- Check statements and watch your charges. Be cautious when giving your card number over the phone. Verify that your monthly statement reflects the amount you authorized. Also, watch for multiple charges.
- Verify secure websites. If you shop online, make sure that you are using a secure site.
- Be cautious about disclosing your credit card number over the phone. If you shop over the phone, be certain that you are dealing with a legitimate company.
Our stand to protect your Bank of McKenney Credit Card(s)

Protect Your Caller ID
All customers should have a Caller ID on file with Bank of McKenney. The Caller ID is a word or combination of letters and numbers selected by the customer and used to secure personal/account information. Customers may be asked for their Caller ID when making telephone inquiries. We recommend that customers not share their Caller ID with anyone else. The Caller ID security access feature enables us to better serve and protect your sensitive personal and account information.
Bank of McKenney online utilizes a security feature known as multifactor Advanced Authentication. This enhanced security application provides you with additional security for online banking. It is a standard part of our online banking and works as part of our commitment to protect you against identity theft and fraud. Advanced Authentication adds extra layers of online security to prevent unauthorized access to your accounts and reinforces the fact that you are at our financial institution’s Internet Banking website. Advanced Authentication FAQs
Q: What does Advanced Online Authentication involve?
A: Advanced Online Authentication consists of the following: an image, a caption and three to six challenge questions. This information is known only to you and your financial institution.
Q: How does Advanced Online Authentication work?
A: Once you enter your user ID on the Internet Banking login screen, click the Validate link, your image will then be displayed along with the caption you create. This confirms that you are at our financial institution’s Internet Banking website and you are safe to enter your Password to access your information. Each time you log in from a different computer, the challenge questions will be asked to verify your identity. Once you provide the correct answers, your image and caption will display and you may enter your password. You will also be asked if you wish to register the computer from which you are logging in. If you select this option, the Advanced Online Authentication system will then capture the information about the computer so that you will not have to answer challenge questions the next time you log in from that same machine.
Q: Can I select my own image rather than the ones provided?
A: Yes, you can provide your own image. The system will include a link that will allow you to upload the image of your choice. The image should be 100 x 100 pixels in size and will need to be one of which you personally own the rights. You cannot upload a copyrighted image.
Q: Will I need to change my password?
A: No. Your password remains the same.
Q: How is Advanced Online Authentication more secure?
A: Advanced Online Authentication protects you from accidentally or unknowingly revealing your user ID and password to an imposter or a fraudulent website. By entering your User ID and clicking validate, we are able to provide you with your image and caption. If the image presented is the one that you selected, you can feel secure in entering your password to proceed. In addition, if someone does get your user ID and password and attempt to login, they will be using a computer that you did not register, therefore, the system will present the user with challenge questions. Since they will not know the answers to the questions that you provided during the set up process, they will be turned away and the financial institution will be notified.
Q: Why do I need to set up challenge questions?
A: Challenge questions and answers provide information known only to you and the financial institution. They help prevent unauthorized access to your account information. If someone else has access to your user ID and password, they will not know the answer to your challenge question and will not be able to get to your information.
Q: Can someone steal my Advanced Online Authentication image and caption?
A: No, your image and caption is only shown to you if you login to a computer that has been registered or if you have successfully responded to the challenge question(s) that have been asked. It is not possible for an unauthorized person to get access to your image.
Q: When I enter my user ID, it asks me a question instead of showing my image. Why?
A: This is to help verify that it's really you signing in. There are several reasons why you might be challenged. These challenge questions are meant to keep imposters out because only you know the answers to these questions. Some reasons might be:
- You are logging in from a different computer
- You are logging in from a different browser
- Your token is missing from your computer because you cleared all the cookies on your computer or your cookie/token disappeared
- You incorrectly typed your User ID on the first attempt
If you are challenged, answer the question with the correct answer, and you are correctly shown your image.
Q: What if I share my computer with someone who has his or her own account? Can we both login from the same machine?
A: Yes, you can use the same computer to log into your individual accounts. There is no limit on how many people can log into the bank website from the same computer.
Q: Can I change my image and text phrase?
A: Yes, to make the change, simply click on the Change Passmark link under ‘My Profile’ on the Online Banking menu bar. If you are having difficulty, you can contact us for assistance.
